Two women in a coaching conversation

What I Learned from Saying “Not Now” and Watching Confidence Bloom

There was a moment I turned down my dream job.

Yes, the dream.

Director-level. Equity in a billion-pound company. The chance to build something from scratch, with a ready-made team and full creative control. Every single box was ticked.

But one question changed everything:

"How does this role align with being a working mum who wants to be fully present?"

The answer? A 24/7 culture with no real room for prioritising family.

That was a red flag for me.

It was a hard decision - but not really. My husband and I had decided years before that when children came, we would prioritise them.

I politely declined.

Years later, I got another call: same company, same role, and they still wanted me.

But by then, I was walking a different path - providing mentorship for women leaders and helping them overcome internal barriers so they can rise in life and business with confidence, clarity, and peace.

It reminded me:

Opportunities will come and go. But moments of being present for our children, marriages, relationships? They can't wait.

As women building businesses and families, sometimes our greatest breakthrough is choosing what the world calls a "pause."

Because choosing presence over progress isn’t a setback. It’s alignment with what matters. And that, is authenticity.

Just this week, I had a powerful coaching moment with someone I'll call Maxine.

She shared her fear of public speaking.

The anxiety. The inner voice that said, "Who do you think you are?"

But as we spoke, I gently pointed out:

"You’re doing it. Right now. You’re speaking - and doing it beautifully."

That lightbulb moment shifted everything.

Confidence doesn’t show up fully formed in front of an audience. It grows conversation by conversation, in small rooms and safe spaces where you see yourself clearly - often for the first time.

Maxine began to reframe her inner dialogue and to celebrate the win of just showing up. That’s where it starts because confidence for women in business isn’t born in crowds. It’s born in clarity.

In her own words:

“I used to freeze at the thought of public speaking. Angela helped me realise I was already doing it - just doubting myself. That shift changed everything.”

So whether you’re in a season of transition or preparing to speak up, let me leave you with this:

📌 You’re more ready than you think.

📌You don’t need a stage to start.

📌And your "not now" might just be making space for your "what’s next."
